Australian Aborigines form a population, as do indigenous groups, who were the victims of massacres by the colonizers and discriminated against by the so-called civilized population. English colonizers were primarily responsible for the massacres of Aboriginal communities. English soldiers approached the villages and offered pleasures to the local population. However, other soldiers were poisoning the population’s water and food with arsenic. Several Aborigines died as a result of the poisoning caused by this chemical element.
Another act of extreme cruelty practiced by the English soldiers was the destruction of places considered sacred by the Aborigines. In addition, they instigated clashes between different villages, causing deaths among them.
After Australian independence was proclaimed, Aborigines began to suffer discrimination from the population of their own country. Among the various killings that took place in this community, “The Stolen Generations” stands out, a kind of “ethnic cleansing” commanded by the Australian government. Men at the behest of the government invaded the tribes and abducted children, including babies. Some children were destined for orphanages, others never knew the destination.
Aborigines currently account for 1% of the Australian population. Some live in desert villages, others live in peripheral neighborhoods in large cities. Due to great discrimination, many are unable to get formal employment and receive government assistance. Some get contributions from the population, playing on the city streets the didgeridoo, a wooden instrument that produces a loud sound similar to a ship’s whistle.
The Australian government is developing a series of compensatory policies, with the aim of integrating Aborigines into society. In view of this, an anti-discrimination law was created, in addition to policies to maintain the remaining tribes, in order to preserve the traditions of these people who throughout its history it has been the target of violence and discrimination.
