The treasurer is responsible in a company or in a group for ensuring and improving the financial ability to act. He is the specialist for financial strategies and advises on investments, financing and financial risk management. His range of tasks is varied and responsible. He ensures that his company has the necessary liquidity and the necessary financial resources.

Typical tasks of a treasurer

The tasks of the treasurer can be roughly divided into five areas, whereby one can specialize in individual key areas. These areas are capital markets and financing, liquidity management, corporate treasury management, risk management and fiscal operations.

Within these areas, the treasurer takes on the following tasks: He ensures that the company or organization has the necessary financial resources to be able to act effectively. This involves a lot of strategic planning. He has an overview of financial markets and how they affect how products and services perform. The treasurer is able to predict financial challenges through analyzes and assessments. This enables the Management Board or the CFO to react appropriately. He often takes on risk management functions himself to ensure the financial well-being of the company.

The Treasurer is in constant contact with banks and, if necessary, negotiates credit and overdraft terms with them. Together with other departments, such as the tax and accounting department, he works on various financial issues. He advises and supports employees on all financial issues that affect the company as a whole. During restructuring and start-ups, he assesses the impact on company finances and creates solutions for new financial challenges by applying his expertise. The Treasurer regularly reports to the Management Board on specific financial issues and prepares presentations for them.

A business administration degree with a focus on finance or accounting or, alternatively, equivalent commercial training with appropriate further training is typically required for the position of treasurer. He should have solid practical experience in the field of corporate finance.
