The job of accounting assistant is a position in finance and accounting.
The accounting assistant typically works at a bank, at an accounting firm or in the accounting department of a company.
He usually reports directly to the accountant or senior accountant and works with him.
Typical tasks of an accounting assistant
Accounting Assistant responsibilities include bookkeeping, database maintenance and reporting. Depending on the size of the company, his bookkeeping tasks include the administration of accounts payable and accounts receivable as well as payroll accounting. The Accounting Assistant is familiar with the common computerized accounting systems. He records account movements and, if necessary, takes care of the invoicing and the associated incoming payments.
He knows the company’s internal guidelines and regulations regarding the recording of financial data and maintains the databases accordingly.
Depending on the requirements, he creates presentations for the management team that clearly show the desired information. If necessary, he researches company-related data and compares it to external data sources.
The accounting assistant should be conscientious and work very precisely. He is familiar with the common accounting software and spreadsheet systems such as Microsoft Excel as well as the relevant databases. He’s good at numbers and math, and has good calculation skills.
Due to its reliability and accuracy, deadlines are met and relevant information is forwarded to the appropriate department in a timely manner.
The accounting assistant preferably has an apprenticeship or a business degree with a focus on finance and accounting and at least one year of work experience. The position of accounting assistant is often an entry-level position.
