ECONOMY

Business etiquette

Many business people speak German. The clothing is quite formal. Long meals are common when negotiating. Many companies are closed during the holiday season in July and August.

Prague
By and large, the Czechs are warm-hearted people to whom hospitality is extremely important, and so it can happen that the bill is paid silently in the restaurant. If this is the case, you should accept the invitation without hesitation (considering the disparity between Czech and Western salaries, it can also be a question of honor) and later try to show your appreciation. Czech society is still dominated by men and older business people in particular would never allow themselves to be invited by a woman, even if she was a boss. If you are invited to a colleague’s home for dinner, a small present is appropriate – preferably a bottle of wine and flowers.

It is essential to be punctual for business meetings. If a delay cannot be avoided, colleagues should be notified. In older companies and for older business people, conservative clothing applies, in young companies you are usually more casual. A jacket and tie for men, a chic trouser suit or a costume for women are suitable for the first business visit. A strong handshake and maintaining eye contact are interpreted as a sign of honesty and sincerity, while speaking very loudly and interrupting the other as attempts to distract from the topic. Addressing someone by their first name is a sign of friendship, but using it unsolicited is considered insulting or disparaging.
