What is a current accountant?

Current accountants – in Anglo-Saxon parlance they are »ledger accountants« – are primarily responsible for managing the accounts with which the company has regular business relationships with its customers and suppliers. Current accounts, also known as personal accounts, are comparable to a current account with an overdraft facility. The customer and vendor accounts are summarized in the current account book, which is included as a sub-ledger in the general ledger of accounting.

Handle incoming and outgoing payments responsibly and conscientiously

In the case of established, mostly long-term business relationships, such as between banks and companies, there are agreements on payment terms, payment processing and tolerated overdrafts. Current accountants are aware of these agreements and ensure that they are observed – they arrange for the timely payment of invoices, monitor incoming payments, remind customers of payments due in an appropriate manner and, conversely, also check claims and reminders from suppliers. They are also the ones who pass on “repeated payment delays” as tips to the responsible authorities and thus do their part to ensure that potential problems receive the necessary attention before they escalate.

Current accountants are in possession of the up-to-date truth

Nobody in the company is as up-to-date on the current financial status as the current account clerks. Your work is highly confidential and discretion internally and externally must be a matter of course. It is they who have full control over current account balances, and they also know what funds are coming in and what payments are due. They are naturally the first point of contact when controlling and management need information about the current account balance and its short-term development for their decision-making. However, this role of the current account clerk is under increasing pressure due to the ongoing digitalization, because the monitoring of account movements and due dates as well as the dunning process are being handled more and more automatically and without manual intervention.

The job description will change

A high level of technical affinity and sound software knowledge have long been prerequisites without which current accountants cannot carry out their work. This is all the more true as they are directly involved in the big topic of “Business Intelligence” through digitization and data networking. It is therefore foreseeable that the job description of current account bookkeepers will change. Here, too, it will increasingly be a question of not only supplying the current figures and data, but of interpreting them intelligently and contributing their knowledge and experience to the (further) development of programs that make the short- and medium-term forecasts more reliable in the long term make.
