Europe was the first region in the world to develop a modern economy, based on commercial agriculture and industry. Currently, it is one of the most important economic centers in the world, particularly Western Europe, where the market economy prevails. The countries of the South and the East are considerably less developed. Prior to the collapse of Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe between 1989 and 1990, communist governments maintained planned economies. After that date, these countries saw the introduction of market mechanisms in their economies, which led to the growth of heavy industry, the production of consumer goods and services.
Agriculture is highly mechanized, except in the East and the South. In the northern European plain, the dominant crops are oats, barley, wheat, vegetables, potatoes and flowers. Southern Europe produces fruits, vegetables, olive oil and wines. Western Europe has the most productive and scientific agriculture on the continent. Much of Europe is relatively poor in minerals, with the exception of coal, oil, natural gas, iron, lead and zinc. Russia is one of the richest regions in the world in nature reserves. Western Europe produces machinery, metal products, electrical products, textiles, automobiles, airplanes, ships, food products, consumer goods, computers, electronic equipment and chemicals.
