International tax consultants work freelance or in a consulting firm and advise their clients on questions of international tax law.
Typical tasks of an international tax consultant
The international tax advisor is consulted for international tax planning as well as for the optimization of international company structures (location planning, group structuring). He is a specialist in international reorganizations, company acquisitions and sales.
His tasks include the assessment of group financing and employee secondments. He prepares expert opinions and provides legal advice on issues relating to the European and other tax systems. He evaluates billing methods and designs employee participation models.
The international tax consultant also takes on the bookkeeping and payroll accounting for foreign companies and represents them at the tax office and other tax authorities. He is well informed about foreign tax law and the double tax agreement and their areas of application.
His areas of responsibility also include business consulting. The scope of advice increases with the increasing internationalization of the companies – questions of foreign tax law, international agreement law and foreign, especially European tax law have to be clarified.
As a matter of principle, the state only approves tax advisors who can show that they have completed the relevant professional training and who have passed the examination. A university degree in economics or law is recognized as training. In addition, three years (four after a degree from a university of applied sciences or ten after commercial training) of practical work in the field of taxation are required.
An applicant from another EC member state can also be admitted to the examination – provided he can produce a diploma.
